Shinnin no Maki

Isami Tasuki Nage

Uki and Tori face one another. Then each step back with right foot, kneel and slap mat with both hands and kiai. This is the Shinin Bow, also known as Isami. Uke punches Tori with right straight punch. Tori parries this punch (Nagashi Uke) with left hand. Tori steps forward with right foot, and grabs Ukis lapel with right hand, thumb down. Uki then steps deep under Uke with left foot, while extending Tori's left hand towards Uke's left thigh. At the same time, Tori pulls with right and squats, bringing right forearm (still gripping Uke's lapel) over Tori's head. Once left foot is planted, Tori pivots toward rear, throwing Uke on a line from Tori's left hip to right shoulder. This includes lifting with Tori's left hand.

Log: Prof. Hudson 3/4/2006:Grab with right hand can be thumb up or thumb down, it really is insignificant. However, some prefer thumb up because it's thumb down in another art. Grabbing the shoulder leaves less slack than grabbing the lapel. (Steve Balzac) Palm striking the shoulder is good for setting up the shoulder grab.

Variation: Prof. Tom Ball 6/22/2006: Prof. Ball showed grabbing the gi/shoulder on Uke's striking side, instead of blocking. Consequently the throw is the other handedness, with the right foot invading under Uke. Prof. stressed throwing over the hips rather than over the shoulders.

Obi Hane Goshi

Uke attempts a double ear box. Tori blocks and then grasps Uke's belt, with left hand palm down, and right hand palm up. Uke then steps in and fits in right hip, and throws Uke as in Hane Goshi.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/22/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Log: Prof. Hudson 3/4/2006:Hip explodes upward, cutting under Uke. Once Uke is uprooted, the thigh can be swept, as in Utsuri Goshi.

Log: Prof. Ball 6/22/2006: Left hand must be palm down, but right hand can be either, and right can slide around to the side to take up slack. Personal notes: Don't bend over, breaking contact. Foot is aligned with Uke's weak line, body and head turn so as to put attention back across that line, more than 180 degrees.

Tsurikomi Taoshi

From kumikata. Tori pushes back and/or down with right hand, also stepping on right foot. This prompts Uke to resist being pushed to the ground, and this resistance creates a bit of a bounce. When Tori senses this bounce, he pivots on the right foot, throwing Uke with an arm whip on Uke's right arm.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/22/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Log: Prof. Hudson 3/4/2006:Arm is taken straight down. Setup move is overturn to the corner, not straight push back. There is no need to grab with thumbs.

Variation: Prof. Ball :Tori grasps lapel, lower than usual. Lapel is whipped outward, then back in with force, though force must be up some, avoid pulling down. Tori steps right foot to just outside Uke's left foot, aligned with Uke's foot. Tori's left foot invades between Uke's feet, heel in, though not quite to line. Knees are bent. Uke is then thrown by Tori moving his weight forward and upward, to the corner. If Tori ends up crossing hands, the technique is wrong.

Variation: Prof. Carr : From kumikata. Tori steps to back right corner, making uke step. Tori then reverses and throws to new weak line, with a body movment similar to Sasae Ashi. The reversal must be slightly before Uke's foot lands.

Momiji Nage

Tori and Uke face each other. Tori applise Ichimonji choke with left hand high and right hand low on Uke's lapels. Uke throws Tomoe Nage. Tori counters by sliding sideways to left while maintaining grip.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/22/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Log: Prof. Hudson 3/4/2006:To prevent Uke from turning into Tori, Tori can place left forearm along jaw.

Log: Prof. Ball 6/22/2006: On choke, turn right palm up, and keep it to the head side of Uke's right arm. Push with left (drawing the bow), but fist can angle up.

Gyaku Hayanada

Uke punches with straight right punch. Tori parries and pulls on arm as in Ude Gyaku Ichi or Ni, but swings left leg high and over Uke's head and arm, while pulling Uke down to ground. Tori ends with Uke flat on stomach, and Tori seated on Uke's right shoulder gripping Uke's wrist with both hands, wrenching the shoulder.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/22/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Log: Prof. Hudson 3/4/2006:Uke's arm is trapped with a "baseball bat" grip. (With Uke's fist being the barrel of the bat.)

Variation: Prof. Carr 6/23/2006: As Tori swings left leg over shoulder, it then extends, heel down to front quarter of Uke. Much as in Tiger Crouches Low. Tori's right leg stays flexed underneath Tori

Hiza Nage

Uke punches with straight right, stepping with right foot forward. (For the sake of Uke's safety, Uke's right toe shoud be angled in significantly, at least 45 degrees.) Tori parries (Nagashi) with left hand, while cutting over Uke's right elbow joint to break Uke's frame. At the same time, Tori's left foot sweeps up to the side of Uke's right knee, collapsing it.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/22/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Variation: Prof. Carr 6/23/2006: From kumikata, Tori thrusts to make Uke put left foot back in defensive stance. For Uke's safety, right foot can be turned in a bit. Tori steps right foot to outside of Uke's right, using arms to tip Uke's weight onto that leg. Tori then whips left foot around to sweep through Uke's right knee. For Uke's safety, lift them just as you sweep the knee.

Osaekomi Gyakute Tori

Tori performs Eri Gatame, but leaving Uke's right arm loose. Uki reaches under Tori's left knee, intending to grab and roll. Tori flexes knee, trapping Uke's hand, extending and barring Uke's arm.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/29/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Log: Prof. Carr 6/23/2006:Once Uke's hand is trapped Tori should first take knee down close to mat, then backward.

Variation: Prof. Carr 6/23/2006:After throw, Tori takes both legs in front. Uke reaches for knee, Tori traps it by closing knees together slightly, crossing ankles, and raising hips, perhaps rotating away from Uke a bit.

Kobushi Shime

Uke attempts double ear slap. Tori ducks and grasps behind Uke's knees, lifting and throwing with shoulder. Once Uke is on the ground, Tori places each fist into the interior of Uke's knee joint, so that the outer tendon of that join divide the fist in half. Tori then drive up on fists, and down on ankles (which are under arms for submission.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/29/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Kesa Hazushi

Uke grasps Tori around midsection from behind including right (sword) arm. Uke grasps Tori's lapels to secure grip. Tori strikes at Uke's head with left hand, to distract, and then sits back into Uke, straddling Uke's right leg. Tori grabs the lower part of the leg and pulls it forward, throwing Uke. Uke then turns 90 degrees to left and kneels on right knee using left thigh to bar Uke's knee.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/29/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Kubi Shime Tomoe Gyakute

Uke performs Momiji Nage (see above). To counter, once on ground Tori turns toward Uke and presses into Uke's armpit with right to create space. Meanwhile, Tori obtains Yubi Tori with his left hand on Uke's right thumb (which is gripping Tori's lapel). This takes the hand off the lapel, and is used to bar Uke's arm. Pressing down on Uke's arm forces Uke up and over to his face.

Log: Nancy Bigham 12/29/2005:First shown. Additional instruction from Francis Starmack

Log: Prof. Hudson 3/4/2006:To begin counter, Tori rotates his feet toward uke, much like a katate tori ichi. Tori obtains yubi tori on Uke's thumb, and presses on Uke's trachea with other hand. Once Uke's hand is removed from the lapel, it is put under Tori's lower armpit, and then Tori presses his right hand out, barring the arm.

Uke "slaps" Tori in the face and then turns his back as to walk away. The "slap" may be accomplished by Tori holding up his hand where his head would be while moving the head back out of miei. Tori then grasps Uke's collar, and places his foot on the base of Uke's spine. Pushing with the foot and pulling with the hand, Tori throws Uke on his back. Tori then strikes at Uke's face with right hammer fist. Uke blocks, crossing both hands over face.

Uke goes to throw O'Goshi. Tori jumps up to obtain Dho Jime from the side, while barring Uke's right arm by passing Tori's left hand beneath it into Tori's armpit area. Tori then throws in a manner similar to Norimi, leaning out to overbalance Uke.

Uke sits seiza. Tori approaches from front, also in seiza, using samuria walk. Uke punches Tori with right hand straight punch. Tori parries with Nagashi Uke, circling hand into Katate Tori San, forcing Uke to rise to kneeling on both knees. Simultaneously, Tori brings Uke's arm around his neck, thread's Tori's left hand over Uke's right shoulder and grasps Uke's lapel with it, thumb down, and rises to Tori's left knee, placing the right thigh across the front of Uke's body and the right lower leg crossing back across Uke's thighs with toe touching the matt, Tori having moved in close to Uke. Tori then does a motion similar to a roll over Tori's right shoulder, throwing Uke. Uke should end this maneuver flat on back with Tori to his right. Tori then moves Uke to a sitting position by taking Uke's hand (still in Tori's right hand) in a wide arc, first away and then out to right. Once Uke is sitting, Tori releases right hand and crosses it over left forearm (which is still holding Uke's lapel) and grasps gi over and in front of Uke's left shoulder. Both elbows are dropped, choking Uke.

Log: Nancy Bigham 1/14/2006:First shown, in Black Belt Class.

Log: Matt Bigham 2/3/2006:Tori can apply joint lock while pulling Uke to sitting position; this gives more inducement to Uke to comply.

Ushiro Nage Tori

Tori performs Ushiro Nage as described above. As Uke blocks, Tori grabs both Uke's arms by wrists and pulls them apart, wrapping up Uke. Tori then folds Uke's arm that is further away (usually the right) back over Uke's other elbow, usually the right. Tori then pulls Uke's right arm in such a way as to wrench Uke's shoulder, usually in an upward direction, since Uke's left elbow is blocked.

Tori throws Uke Tora Nage (typically without beginning with punch from Uke). After third throw Uke rolls out and obtains Katate Tori Shi on Tori, using it to throw Tori three times. After third throw, Tori takes down Uke with Ashi Karami.
